In the area of precision machining, rolls, sheet and strip metal and roll bearing components are examples of parts requiring rapid measurement of the machined surface.

As well as roughness, the problem of chatter marks is of great importance. The OS 500 sensor provides not only information about the presence of chatter marks, but also, by means of Fourier analysis (FFT), exact values of orders and amplitudes. To take an example, for roller bearing races this can be as small as 0.04 µm.

The OS 500’s high measurement speed allows complete measurement of critical functional surfaces and thus the display of changes in the roughness. This allows the condition of the tool (grinding or polishing wheels for example) to be monitored continuously. For the graphical display of roughness and reflected light intensity, the machine operator gathers the necessary information, enabling him easily to determine the optimal point to dress or change the tool.
